I am a board-certified specialist in internal and addiction medicine. My research has focused on such areas as interventions for substance-abusing populations; screening and treating people with substance use disorders, including opioid misuse, and other health problems; and testing new pharmaceuticals to treat medical and psychiatric disorders. I have conducted and published research on risk factors for impaired driving, victim impact panels, underreporting of substance use problems among convicted driving under the influence (DUI/DWI) offenders, psychiatric disorders among convicted impaired drivers, drugged driving, and the effects of alcohol policies on impaired-driving crashes. I have conducted a longitudinal study of convicted impaired drivers that followed first DUI/DWI offenders for fifteen years after referral for screening and conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with a sample of study participants. I have authored over one hundred peer-reviewed publications, with over forty of these focused on impaired driving.
